iv. the hero confronts the villain, who almost wins but is finally defeated in a slam-bang climax: The gang leader almost kills Hungry Wolf, but Hungry Wolf manages, with the help of a blind gunfighter and a rancher's spoiled son, to defeat the villain in a slam-bang climax.

v. resolution. tells what happens to the major characters as a result of the hero's victory or defeat: Hungry Wolf dies of his wounds. His granddaughter turns away from white man's medicine and returns to the tribe to carry on her grandfather's work.

■ How Joe Smigelski Saves the World

I. the gripping opening: The villain and his gang hoodwink an air force security officer and steal an atom bomb.

ii. the evil plot gets under way and the hero, in terrible trouble, fights a defensive battle: Joe (the bumbling P.I.) is hired by the security officer to find the atom bomb before anyone knows it's missing. Joe stumbles blindly through the clues and suspects and gets nowhere.

iii. the turning point (often a kind of symbolic death and rebirth). the , hero goes on the offensive: Joe stumbles on the villain and his plot by chance and goes after him.

iv. the hero confronts the villain, who almost wins but is finally defeated in a slam-bang climax: Joe defeats the villain with his stupid one-finger martial art and the chunk of armor plate around his neck.

v. resolution. tells what happens to the major characters as a result of the hero's victory or defeat: Joe basks in his unearned glory. The atom bomb gets back in its rack and no one's the wiser.

■ Hunting Season

i. the gripping opening: Frank Foxxworthy and four of his friends are deer hunting when they encounter space aliens stalking a deer.

ii. the evil plot gets under way and the hero, in terrible trouble, fights a defensive battle: Frank is horrified when one of his buddies turns up missing. He meets a strange woman who claims to be Kitty Apple, a waitress in a bar and an amateur ufologist. But he discovers the truth, that she's an alien.

iii. the turning point (often a kind of symbolic death and rebirth). the hero goes on the offensive: Our hero gets himself captured in order to rescue his friend and is then hunted and manages to turn the tables on the alien hunters.

iv. the hero confronts the villain, who almost wins but is finally defeated in a slam-bang climax: After he helps the woman alien get back the spaceship, she wants to vaporize our hero, but in a confrontation, he defeats her and saves himself and his buddy, and maybe all the Earth.

v. resolution. tells what happens to the major characters as
